Four Men Brought a Piano to the Odessa Beach

Why do I do this?
For over 45 years, I ran a travel agency helping people explore places far beyond Europe. I’ve always loved discovering the world myself — most recently returning from a trip to Hanoi, travelling overland from Stockholm.
I first visited Ukraine just after the Maidan revolution in 2014. I wanted to experience history as it unfolded. When the full-scale invasion began in 2022, I returned again — this time to Kyiv, Butcha, Irpin — and saw both the damage and peoples determination. I met volunteers, local defenders, and ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
That experience moved me. I started raising money and collecting equipment to support Ukraine. In 2023, I organized a study tour for 14 people. We were welcomed warmly and told more than once: “You are heroes.”.
We agree that Ukraine needs all possible support to withstand Russian terror. Military resistance would not be possible without the strength of civil society. During our tours, we visit volunteer organizations and walk through Ukraine’s beautiful historic towns — but also witness the destruction caused by Russian bombing. Most important, we travel to villages that were earlier under occupation. The devastation there is shocking. We meet people still living in these places, hear their stories, and share a day of their everyday life. “You are heroes,” they’ve told us many times. That solidarity — simply showing up — means more than we can imagine.
These tours are more than travel — they are acts of solidarity. That’s why I continue.
The tour in August 2025 will be the 6th tour.
This is the only organized tour to Ukraine of its kind today.
